Summer Financial Aid
Thinking about taking summer classes? Good news — financial aid is available to help cover your costs!
How Does Summer Financial Aid Work?
Summer financial aid is a little different because it can involve two different financial aid years. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
Two Financial Aid Years Impact Summer Aid
2024–25 Financial Aid Year: Federal Grant, Year-Round Pell, Federal Work-Study & Federal Loans (For FAFSA Students Only)
- If you received a Federal Pell Grant during 2024–25, you may use any remaining funds for summer.
- You may also qualify for Year-Round Pell, which lets you receive up to 150% of your annual Pell award if you take summer courses.
- You may be eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS) if you have financial need and are enrolled in at least 6 units.
- You may also qualify for Federal Student Loans if you’re enrolled in at least 6 units (half-time), have completed loan requirements and also meet SAP requirements.
- These types of aid are only available to FAFSA students — students who applied through the California Dream Act (CADAA) are not eligible for federal aid.
- To receive aid, ensure your 2024–25 FAFSA is submitted and all required documents are completed.
2025–26 Financial Aid Year: California College Promise Grant (CCPG) – FAFSA & California Dream Act Students
- Determines eligibility for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG), which waives enrollment fees for summer classes.
- You must submit the FAFSA or CADAA for the 2025–26 academic year to qualify for the CCPG.
Key Takeaway:
- If you’re a FAFSA student, you may qualify for both Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study (FWS), Federal Loans, CCPG to cover summer costs.
- If you’re a CADAA student, your summer aid eligibility is based only on CCPG.
Types of Summer Aid
The Federal Pell Grant provides free money based on financial need.
If you already received a Federal Pell Grant during the school year, you might still get more for summer through Year-Round Pell. This lets you receive up to 150% of your annual Pell award in one year — even if you used your full award already in fall and spring.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be Pell Grant-eligible based on the 2024–25 FAFSA.
- Be enrolled in at least a unit in the summer.
- Have unmet financial need
Important: California Dream Act students are not eligible for the Pell Grant or Year-Round Pell funding.
Federal Work-Study allows you to work a part-time job on or off campus and earn money to help pay for school-related expenses.
To be eligible for Summer Work-Study:
- Submit the 2024–25 FAFSA
- Submit a Federal Work-Study interest form
- Demonstrate financial need
- Enroll in at least 6 units (half-time)
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Work-study jobs can help you build experience, gain new skills, and earn income while in school.
Loans are borrowed money you must repay later, but they can be helpful if you need more support for school costs.
To be eligible for a Summer Loan:
- Submit the 2024–25 FAFSA
- Enroll in at least 6 units (half-time)
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Complete:
- A loan application form (request form with the Financial Aid Office)
- Loan Entrance Counseling
- Master Promissory Note (MPN)
Loans may not be for everyone, so ask questions and explore your options.
CCPG waives your enrollment fees — meaning you don’t pay the per-unit cost for your summer classes.
To be eligible:
- Submit the 2025–26 FAFSA or CADAA
- Be a California resident or meet AB540 requirements
CCPG is available to both FAFSA and CADAA students.
