Benefits of Being a Full-Time Student

We encourage students to consider the advantages of enrolling as a full-time student. Taking 12 or more units per semester not only helps you complete your academic goals faster, but it also opens up greater financial aid opportunities and other benefits that can enhance your college experience. Below, you’ll find the key reasons why being a full-time student can be a smart choice for your academic and financial future.
More Units = More Financial Aid

While part-time students can receive financial aid, full-time students receive more. If you qualify for federal or state grants, taking more units increases the amount of money you can receive.

Note: The chart below reflects estimated award amounts based on the information provided through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Grant amounts vary depending on individual circumstances and enrollment status.

  • Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG 1 and SSCG 2): These grants provide additional financial support to Cal Grant recipients who are enrolled full-time.
    • SSCG 1: Full-time students taking 12-14.5 units per semester are eligible for additional financial aid to support their educational expenses.
    • SSCG 2: Students who enroll in 15 or more units per semester receive an even higher grant amount. This grant is designed to incentivize and reward students for maintaining momentum in their academic journey and staying on track for timely graduation.
