Many political science graduates pursue careers in fields like government, law, journalism, education, or non-profits, where salaries can be competitive.
Salaries for political science majors in the United States can vary widely depending on factors like education level, experience, industry, and location.
Entry-level positions may offer modest salaries, but with experience and further education (like a master's degree or law degree), earning potential can increase significantly. The median salary for political scientists was around $132,350 per year in May 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, this is a specialized role often requiring a Master’s degree.
Based on the feedback we receive from the Chabot College Political Science alumni, in the Bay Area, political science-related careers starting salaries are generally in the $60,000-$80,000 range. These starting positions often provide a strong foundation for a variety of advancement opportunities and career paths with very competitive earning growth.
Fun fact: Outside of STEM degrees, Political Science is the liberal arts degree that leads to the highest average midcareer salary. Everybody knows there is money in politics and in law!
