Math Course Selection

See Math Course Sequence Chart

The legislations AB 705 and AB 1705 have changed how students select math classes at California Community Colleges. Students cannot be required to take pretransfer level math classes, but Chabot College will allow you to take them if you determine that you need them.

Under the law, you have direct access to the following TRANSFER-LEVEL courses. See the recommendations based on your academic/career field.

Course Sequence to Calculus for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

  • MTH 21 - College Algebra for BSTEM (Also a preparation for MTH 15)
    • MTH 221W - Noncredit College Algebra for BSTEM Corequisite Support Workshop
  • MTH 22 - Trigonometry
  • MTH 1 - Calculus I (Some majors in the life sciences accept MTH 15)
    • MTH 201W - Noncredit Calculus I Corequisite Support Workshop

Business

  • MTH 15 - Applied Calculus (Some Business programs may require MTH 1)
  • MTH 33S - Finite Math
  • BUS 19 - Business Statistics

Statistics

  • MTH 43 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics
    • Noncredit Introduction to Probability and Statistics Corequisite Workshop
  • PSY 5 - Introductory Statistics for Behavioral and Social Science
    • PSY 5W - Introductory Statistics for the Behavioral and Social Sciences Corequisite Workshop
  • BUS 19 - Business Statistics

Other GE Math Courses

  • MTH 47 - Math for Liberal Arts
  • MTH 41S - Number Systems (Transfers only to CSU, not UC)
  • MTH 88 - Introduction to Data Science (May also meet the statistics requirement of some programs)

Corequisite workshops must be taken concurrently with the course they support.

By completing the Math Course Selection (MCS) process, you satisfy a requirement in the Chabot matriculation process, which also is necessary before enrolling in a math class. Based on your math course completion and GPA in high school, the MCS

  • Will recommend a nonbinding placement in the sequence to STEM calculus,
  • May restrict you to certain sections of a course, and
  • May require you to concurrently enroll in a corequisite course for additional support.

BEFORE you begin the Chabot Math Course Selection (MCS) process in CLASS-Web, learn about Chabot math courses:

Read the following information to help you choose your first math course at Chabot.

  • Read more about the difference between MTH 1 and MTH 15, if you need calculus for your program.

  • MTH 33S: Some bachelor's degree business programs (e.g. at the following CSU: Chico, East Bay, Fresno, Monterey Bay, Stanislaus, Sonoma) accepts this course instead of a calculus course.

  • Use the table of academic/career fields to help you decide which first-level transferable math course to take. This is a rough guideline to help you be aware of your math needs. Because programs vary, you must check the details of specific programs and see a counselor for guidance to get the most current information.
  • For vast majority of students, pre-transfer math courses are NOT recommended. Research shows that the rate at which students complete a transfer-level math course within one-year is significantly higher if they begin at a transfer-level math course, with appropriate additional support for those who need it.
See "What is Additional Instructional Support for Math?" below.

  • See Math Course Sequence Chart to get an overview of Chabot math offerings at all levels.

  • If you had an IEP/504 plan in high school, please consider contacting Disabled Students Programs and Services for additional support.

Based on high school transcript, some students are mandated additional support for BSTEM courses and recommended additional support for SLAM courses. The content include one to three hours of instruction covering just-in-time review, classwork to reinforce concepts, or other support activities.

  • Even if additional support is not required, it is available to you.
  • For MTH 1, additional support is provide through noncredit MTH 201W. These sections are linked and labeled with “C.” For example, MTH 1-C01 is linked with MTH 201W-C01, and both must be taken together.
  • For MTH 21, additional support is provide through noncredit MTH 221W. These sections are linked and labeled with “C.” For example, MTH 21-C01 is linked with MTH 221W-C01, and both must be taken together.
  • For MTH 43, additional support is provide through noncredit MTH 243W. These sections are linked and labeled with “C.” For example, MTH 43-C01 is linked with MTH 243W-C01, and both must be taken together.
  • For PSY 5, additional support is provided through PSY 5W. Students in any PSY 5 section can enroll in any PSY 5W section. PSY 5W is a 0.5-unit credit course.

The Math Course Selection (MCS) Tool is used by students to find the appropriate first semester Math course and pathway.

Please follow these steps:

Step1: Log into CLASS-Web

Step 2: Click on the 'Student Services' tab

screenshot of CLASS-Web with arrow pointing to Student Services tab.

Step 3: Towards the bottom of the page, click on the 'Chabot Math Course Selection' link.

Step 4: Follow the directions for each page, and when completed, a recommendation will be displayed.

Step 5: If you choose to take a pre-transfer course (MTH 53, 55, 122, 253, or 255), you must also complete the Pre-Transfer Math Course Petition, whose link is located right below that for Math Course Selection.

After you complete the MCS process, you will be able to enroll in CLASS-Web for a transfer-level math course. If you have coursework from another college or a passing score on the AP Calculus AB/BC Exam or IB Mathematics HL Exam that can place you higher than a direct access course, please bring verification to a counselor for higher placement and course credit. A passing score on the AP Statistics Exam also qualifies for course credit at Chabot to satisfy math requirement, but it does not contribute to advancement toward Calculus.

Contact the Math Coordinator Mr. Ho at mho@chabotcollege.edu if you have questions regarding math placement. Describe your situation and, optionally, provide a phone number and time to best reach you.
