Math Course Selection

Read the following information to help you choose your first math course at Chabot.

• First-level transferable math courses fall under two broad categories:
  • SLAM = Statistics and Liberal Arts Math.
    • MTH 41, 43, 47; PSY 5; and BUS 19 fall under this category. 
    • These are generally courses taken to satisfy the math requirement for transfer. Most students will not need to take more math classes after completing one of these courses. 
  • BSTEM = Business, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

    • MTH 21: This course leads to calculus and presumes satisfactory completion of Algebra 2 or IM 3 in high school. 

    • MTH 33S: Some bachelor's degree business programs (e.g. at the following CSU: Chico, East Bay, Fresno, Monterey Bay, Stanislaus, Sonoma) accepts this course instead a calculus course. Read more about BSTEM Calculus sequences. 

• Use the table of academic/career fields to help you decide which first-level transferable math course to take. This is a rough guideline to help you be aware of your math needs. Because programs vary, you must check the details of specific programs and see a counselor for guidance to get the most current information. 
• For vast majority of students, pre-transfer math courses are NOT recommended. Research shows that the rate at which students complete a transfer-level math course within one-year is significantly higher if they begin at a transfer-level math course, with appropriate additional support for those who need it.

• If you had an IEP/504 plan in high school, please consider contacting Disabled Students Programs and Services for additional support. 

Based on high school transcript, some students are mandated additional support for BSTEM courses and recommended additional support for SLAM courses. The content include one to three hours of instruction covering just-in-time review, classwork to reinforce concepts, or other support activities. 

• Even if additional support is not required, it is available to you. 
• For MTH 21, additional support is provided through MTH 210. Students in any section of MTH 21 can enroll in any MTH 210 section designated for their course. MTH 220 is a noncredit and does not require tuition fee. MTH 210 is recommended for students with less than 3.4 HS GPA who never enrolled in calculus, and especially for students who less than 2.6 HS GPA and never enrolled in precalculus or IM 4. 
• For MTH 43 and 47, additional support is provided through MTH 220. Students in any section of MTH 43 or 47 can enroll in any MTH 220 section designated for their course. MTH 220 is a noncredit and does not require tuition fee. MTH 220 is recommended for students with less than 3.0 HS GPA and especially for students with less than 2.3 HS GPA.
• For PSY 5, additional support is provided through PSY 5W. Students in any PSY 5 section can enroll in any PSY 5W section. PSY 5W is a 0.5-unit credit course. 

The Math Course Selection (MCS) Tool is used by students to find the appropriate first semester Math course and pathway.

Please follow these steps:

Step1: Log into CLASS-Web

Step 2: Click on the 'Student Services' tab

Step 3: Towards the bottom of the page, click on the 'Chabot Math Course Selection' link.

Step 4: Follow the directions for each page, and when completed, a recommendation will be displayed.

Step 5: If you choose to take a pre-transfer course (MTH 53, 55, 122, 253, or 255), you must also complete the Pre-Transfer Math Course Petition, whose link is located right below that for Math Course Selection.
