Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am a new hire. When can I expect Canvas access?

A: It takes 2-3 business days after you being listed on the course schedule as Instructor of Record for Canvas to recognize you as a valid user.

Please direct questions about your Instructor of Record status to your division’s senior administrative assistant. They will coordinate with your assigned scheduler(s).

Q: How do I process an incomplete in my Canvas course?

A: The process begins with the Incomplete contract provided by Admissions & Records.

  1. Complete the Incomplete Contract.
  2. Obtain the student's signature.
  3. Submit the completed contract to A&R.
  4. Email Instructional Technology the following information for each Incomplete:
    • Student name and W number
    • Course CRN
    • When to close Canvas access (the date the Incomplete expires)
  5. Add the incomplete section to missing assignments.

Complete instructions are located in "Processing an Incomplete for a Student" (you will need access to Tools for Teaching for this resource).

Q: I am a new Canvas user. Does Chabot offer training?

A: Yes! We offer several means of year-round support.

Our Canvas site, Tools for Teaching, provides even more on-demand resources.

  • Multiple workshops every week during spring and fall (full schedule on the Tools home page)
  • Photo and (captioned) video tutorials with full step-by-step instructions
  • Workshop slides, activities, and other helpful tips

Q: How do I log into Canvas for the first time?

  1. Navigate to Canvas using Chrome. You may want to bookmark the site for easy future access.
  2. Enter your W number (including the W).
  3. Enter your default password (the first two letters of both your first and last names - all in lowercase - followed by the last four digits of your W number).

Q: How do I reset my Canvas password?

If you try to reset your password by clicking on Forgot Password, Canvas will send a reset link to your Chabot email account. We are also able to reset your password. Please email us for assistance.

Once you successfully log in for the first time (or after a successful password reset), please change your password for security reasons.
