Evacuation Procedures

  1. Evacuation of all buildings will occur when a fire alarm sounds or upon notification by CAMPUS SAFETY, MANAGER, OR ADMINISTRATOR.

  2. Be aware of all the exits in the area and Know the evacuation routes in your work area.

  3. If necessary, activate the building alarm. CAUTION: THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS ONLY IN THE BUILDING IN WHICH ALARM ACTIVATED.

  4. When the building fire alarm is sounded, walk quickly to the nearest exit.

  5. Assist the disabled in exiting the building. Specific suggestions for assisting a disabled person to evacuate: 
    1. Visually Impaired/Blind: Have the person take your elbow and guide him/her to a safe area. Inform the individual where he/she is and explain what the next procedure(s) will be.

    2. Hearing Impaired/Deaf: The individual may not have heard a warning device or Communicate with a short written message or speak slowly and directly to the person. Use a minimum of words. Gesture toward an exit or place of safety.

    3. Wheelchair Users: Depending on the emergency, certain actions should be Consult the individual:
      1. If the disabled person must wait for exits to clear, try to assign someone to wait with him/her. Evacuate as soon as feasible.
      2. If it is possible to push the wheelchair safely and quickly without blocking exits, do
      3. One or two persons may need to carry the disabled Leave the wheelchair behind.

    4. The wheelchair occupant or other disabled person, when possible, should prepare for emergencies ahead of time by instructing a classmate or instructor on how to assist them in case of an emergency.
