Immigration Policy Updates

Protecting your Status

  • Maintain your Status:  You should review the ensure that you are meeting all of the requirements of  your staus, such as enrolling in a full time course load, updaing your address with the DSO within 10 days, having a valid passport and Form I-20, not working without authorization, and filing tax forms.
  • Follow All U.S. Laws.  Adhere to all U.S. federal, state, and local laws.  This is important to understand these regulations, follow all required procedures and remain in full compliance.  It is against federal law to possess, sell or use marijuana (cannabis containing over 0.3% THC).  The legal drinking age for alcohol is 21 years of age.  A Driving Under the Influence arrest (having a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08% or higher) is a serious offence with penalties including visa revocation.
  • Carry Documentation of Your Status.  All F-1 students should carry evidence of registration (Form I-94) as well as other documents that confirm your immigration status (your Form I-20, valid EAD card, or I-797 Approval Notice).  If you are traveling outside of the Bay Area, always bring the official documents with you.
  • Seek Legal Assistance When Needed.  If  you have any interactions with law enforcement or immigration officials, reach out to the ISP Office so that we can assist and direct  you to relevant resources.  You may also consider contacting an attorney.  In some circumstances, you may want two attorneys: one criminal and one immigration.  Many attorneys only specialize in one area of law.
