Public Art Proposal Criteria

Proposals for public art projects should address the following 4 areas:

  1. Purpose
    Public art projects on the Chabot College campus should center themes of social justice and equitable representation and reflect the multicultural backgrounds of students – along with promoting Chabot College's mission and values statement around community and diversity. The artwork should make a strong aesthetic and educational statement, as well as beautify the Campus. Overall, we are interested in projects that do the following: 
    • Beautify campus;
    • Have meaningful content;
    • Emphasize our college mission and values;
    • Demonstrate our diverse cultures, identities, and social justice ethos.
  1. Basic Criteria
    Required criteria, including but are not limited to the following: 
    • Proposed art shall display a high level of artistic quality and craftsmanship that supports and enhances the Chabot College Educational Master Plan (EMP);
    • Honors the intended group(s);
    • Historically accurate;
    • Manageable for the proposed site at Chabot College;
      • Please include project site, medium and dimensions
      • If outside the project needs to be weatherproof and developed for permanent outdoor visibility;
    • Shall be accessible to the public and present no environmental or safety hazards;
    • Subject to review by the Chabot Public Art Collective and College President and any experts the sponsoring groups seeks to retain in order to complete the project
    • The sponsoring individual/group should seek input from the Facilities and Infrastructure committee around practical considerations either before or after the CPAC reviews the project for recommendation to the college president
  1. Project Budget
    • Determine total cost for the project including
      • artist fee,
      • materials,
      • equipment rentals,
      • installation costs, etc.
      • outline funding source
  1. Artist selection and Timeline
    • If the committee or President recommends an open call for artist, please consult with CPAC to develop a Call for Proposals (CFP)
      • Determine a due date for proposal submission
      • CPAC reviews the applicants and selects a finalist by vote in consultation with sponsoring group
      • Artist contacted after review and selection
      • Artist creates and submits final project design and production timeline for review (in consultation with committee and office of the president)
    • Installation of artwork based on production timeline
    • Any artist selected for a project must submit application (see below for details)

Artist Application materials must include:

    1. Letter of Interest, 500 words maximum, including: 
      1. Summary of your artistic focus. This should include a brief description of your inspirations and interests that are reflected in your artwork. 
      2. Summary of your professional career, and how your experiences may qualify you for this public art project, such as: education and training as a professional artist; an exhibition record; previous public or private commissions; participation in artist-in residency programs, or other related activities indicative of a professional practice.
      3. Connection to or understanding of Chabot College Community 
    2. Resume, two page maximum 
      1. A simple resume, outlining your work, experience, and/or training.
    3. Please answer the following, in one paragraph 
      1. What motivates you to apply for this project 
    4. 2-5 images of previous work 
      1. We accept all image file types up to 5MB. Images should be at least 72 dpi and no larger than 1280 x 1280 pixels. 
    5.  Image descriptions 
      1. Please include the title, medium, dimensions, and year for each work.
      2. You may also include a brief statement (2 sentences maximum) about each work.

Note: The purpose of the CPAC is to review and recommend public art proposals in keeping with the mission of the college to the college president. The work group is not responsible for funding projects or facilitating the implementation of all approved projects.
