Academic Standing: Notice or Pause
See how to get your hold removed
To promote a more supportive approach to student success, the following terms have been updated:
-
Academic Probation is now called Academic Notice.
-
Progress Probation is now called Progress Notice.
-
Dismissal is now called Pause.
During this transition, you may see both the old and new terms used interchangeably.
Students on Pause can still access student support services and enroll in noncredit courses.
What is Academic/Progress Notice?
Academic Notice: A student will be placed on academic notice if you achieve less than a cumulative (overall) 2.0 grade-point average after completing 12 or more units. Students will be removed from academic notice when their cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher (having above a 2.0 overall GPA is considered "good standing").
Progress Notice: Students are placed on progress notice after having attempted 12 or more cumulative
units and "W", "I", and "NP" symbols reach or exceed half the cumulative units attempted.
Students will be removed from progress notice when the cumulative number of "W", "I",
and "NP" symbols recorded is less than half the cumulative units attempted.
Academic or Progress Pause: If you remain on notice for three consecutive semesters without improvement, you'll be placed on pause. However, if you show improvement during a semester on notice — earning a 2.0+ GPA for academic notice or completing 50%+ of units for progress notice — you'll receive an automatic extension, giving you more time to get back on track.
Chabot College is here to support you through your academic journey and believe in your ability to get back on good standing. Please read below to learn more about notice, pause and how to remove holds.

Review our Policy on Restart Based on Academic Progress
Notification is always sent to students either via email or conventional mail. Students are strongly encouraged to check their academic status at the end of every semester in order to verify their performance levels.
Can I be on both academic and progress notice at the same time? Yes it is possible to be on both academic and progress notice at the same time. A student could have attempted 12 or more units and have an overall gpa below 2.0 and also have withdrawn, gotten an incomplete, or no pass in 50% or more of their attempted units.
What are my limitations as a student on Academic and/or Progress Notice
Besides possibly having registration holds on your account you might also see changes
to your priority registration status and California College Promise Grant eligibility.
Students should also be aware of repeat limits for attempts on classes. A student may only enroll in a course 3 times, through a combination of substandard
grades (D, F, NP, or NC) and withdrawals (W). All prior course attempts at the Chabot
Las Positas Community College District will count toward the limit. Students may seek
approval to enroll in a course a 4th time through the petition process.
What does my cumulative Grade Point Average mean?
Your cumulative GPA is the total average of your grades for all classes attempted
at Chabot. Your cumulative total can go up or down depending on how you do in each
semester.
Why should I speak to a counselor?
For Academic Notice 2 you are required to meet with a counselor in order to get your
hold removed. For other types of notice and pause it is highly encouraged to see a
counselor. You can speak to a counselor in order to determine unit recommendations
for the upcoming semester as well as how you can makeup your grade point balance or
progress ratio. Counselors can help you with: creating a student educational plan,
provide information about majors, transfer planning, referral to campus/community
resources, personal counseling, discuss how to develop better study skills and habits,
and career counseling. Make your appointment early!
When will I return to good academic/progress standing?
You will return to good academic standing when you raise your cumulative GPA to at
least a 2.0 and complete 50% of the units attempted. For progress standing, when a
student reduces the cumulative units of W, NP or I grades to less than 50% of their
total units attempted, they are considered in good progress standing.
I received good grades this past semester, why am I on notice?
Although you have done better academically during your most recent semester it may
not have been enough to bring your cumulative GPA up to a 2.00. You will be automatically
taken off of notice once you become in good standing with the college.
With the new notice extension rule students who were at risk of getting on pause who receive a 2.0 in the most recent term, regardless of their overall gpa, will have their notice extended and pause pushed out in order to receive more time to improve their overall gpa.
Example: You're on academic notice with a cumulative GPA of 1.85. This semester you earn a 2.5 GPA, but your cumulative GPA only rises to 1.95 (still below 2.0). Instead of moving to pause, you get an additional semester on notice to continue improving.
or
You're on progress notice with 55% of your total units showing W/I/NP grades. This semester you complete 11 out of 12 units (92% completion), but your cumulative completion rate only improves to 52% (still above the 50% threshold). Instead of moving to pause, you get an additional semester on notice to continue improving.
I haven't been enrolled at Chabot for a long time, why did I receive a probation letter?
All previous semesters of enrollment are part of your permanent record at Chabot.
Past semesters and new semesters will reveal an accurate history of your cumulative
record. Your past academic history may have an effect on current academic status.
I didn't attend classes this past semester, how can I be on notice?
If you registered for classes and failed to officially withdraw, your instructor(s)
may have turned in failing grades for you. It is your responsibility to officially
withdraw from classes by dropping from a class by the drop (NGR) deadline.
I am only taking classes for credit and/or personal interest and am not pursuing a
degree or certificate. Can I be taken off your list?
Unfortunately our computer generated program has no way of determining a student's
personal pursuits. We are required to inform all students when they fall into a notice/pause
category. A letter will be sent out for all notice/pause statuses.
What if I have personal problems that have affected my schoolwork?
Schedule an appointment with a counselor to discuss personal challenges or to discuss
school, work conflicts, course selection, a change in family needs, educational goals,
or any concerns you may have regarding your scholastic progress. Services are in place
to help you succeed. You may also visit our CARES mental health center to receive
mental health support services.
Does notice affect my financial aid?
Financial aid students must follow the satisfactory academic progress standards established by the financial aid office. Those standards are different that the
college's academic standards for all students. You should check your financial aid
eligibility with the Financial Aid Office.
Can I repeat a course to alleviate my previous substandard grade(s)?
Students may repeat a course in which they received a D or F. By repeating a course
with a substandard grade, it will alleviate the initial grade you received. It is
recommended to speak to a counselor to determine whether a class is worth repeating.
There might be a way to alleviate a substandard grade without having to repeat the
course. Ask your counselor about academic renewal.
What is academic renewal?
Students can request an academic renewal for substandard grades (D, F) received. The
substandard grade(s) may be disregarded in the computation of a student's GPA if the
work was not reflective of the student's present scholastic level of performance.
Please speak to a counselor for further details.
What are the consequences of being on notice?
Consequences include but are not limited to:
- You may be unable to register for classes until your hold is removed
- You may lose your priority registration date
- You may lose promise grant eligibility
- Financial Aid may be suspended.
- Being blocked from retaking a class for the third time due to repeat limits.
- Expenses for repeating classes to raise GPA.
- Graduation and/or transfer delays or complications

Tips and Resources for your Academic Success
Chabot College is here to support you on your journey towards academic success. Please consider some of the tips and resources below as you are navigating notice and pause.
- See your counselor to create your Comprehensive Student Education Plan and to keep
it updated. A comprehensive Student Education Plan (SEPC) includes all the classes
you need to reach your academic goals, including transfer and degrees/certificates.
Students with an SEPC are more likely to succeed and persist at Chabot.
- Whats your magic number of units? For every unit that you are registered for this
is equal to one hour in class and 2 hours of study time outside of class. More independent
work is required of you on your own time to be successful in your classes than the
time you spend in class. Consider adjusting the number of units you are taking every
semester based on how much you are working and how many personal responsibilities
you have in your life at the time. Ensure you are putting in the required outside
of class time to be successful in your classes.
- Need help with improving your study skills? Do you want to understand what college
is all about? Consider taking a psychology counseling class to improve your study
skills, clarify your career/major goals, understand transfer, or learn about college
resources. These classes are taught by counselors and are created with your success
in mind. Click on our psychology counseling class list to learn more about our offerings.
- Do you feel like you can benefit from tutoring? Chabot college offers no cost tutoring
in a wide range of subjects. Our tutoring centers include the WRAC, Learning Connection, The STEM center, and the Comm lab. You don't have to struggle on your own in challenging classes, get a tutor today!
- Have you thought about speaking with a mental health professional about challenges
you are facing? Personal challenges can greatly affect our academic performance. Therapy
provides a safe and supportive environment for you to work through these challenges.
Reach out to our CARES mental health team. As an enrolled student you are eligible for up to 6 therapy sessions based on your
need.
- Looking for support for some of your basic needs? The gladiator resource hub is a one stop shop for food, coffee, study lounges, resources, and lockers. Without
our basic needs being met it is challenging to do well academically, and every human
is entitled to having their basic needs met.
- Finances getting in the way of your academic success? Sign up for financial aid or apply for a scholarship. Financial aid and scholarships are created to provide financial relief to you so that you can focus on your academics
versus working. Visit the financial aid or scholarships page today to see how you

Policy on Restart Based on Academic Status
Students who have been placed on pause from Chabot or Las Positas College may apply for restart after one semester of non-attendance. Students so applying may be restarted from pause upon the approval of the Vice President of Student Services or designee of Chabot or Las Positas College. Students restarted after pause from Chabot or Las Positas College may be subject to regulation of their classes and number of units attempted. Students who restart after pause who are subsequently placed on pause a second time will not be eligible for restart until after one (1) year of non-attendance. In extreme cases in which pause resulted from extenuating circumstances, students ineligible for admission under the above regulations may appeal to the Vice President of Student Services or designee for special consideration and may restart after pause upon approval of their petition. Such extenuating circumstances shall be those acute medical, family, or other personal problems which rendered normal academic functioning unlikely or impossible. The Vice President of Student Services, with the approval of the President or designee, may reduce or eliminate the waiting period described above due to extenuating circumstances. Any student admitted via this method must submit to a controlled academic program under the immediate supervision of a counselor.

Students so applying may restart after pause upon the approval of the Vice President of Student Services or designee. Students on restart after pause who have a cumulative progress ratio of less than fifty percent (50%) after completion of the semester immediately following restart shall be placed on progress notice. If after another semester they still have poor cumulative progress, then they shall be placed on pause and shall not be eligible for restart until after one (1) year of non-attendance. The Vice President of Student Services or designee may reduce or eliminate the waiting period described above due to extenuating circumstances. Any student placed on restart after pause via this method must submit to a controlled academic program under the immediate supervision of a counselor.
