What to Do About Web 2.0 Sites: Blogs

Blogs
A blog, or web log, is simply one person or a group of persons' online journal in web form where new entries appear frequently.   Authors of these are usually called "Bloggers." Given that definition, you would find that most blogs are like personal web pages, except they will be updated on a frequent basis. Many institutions, including news organizations, newspapers, colleges, and libraries also have their own blog pages.

Blogs usually will have some type of central theme or subject.  The author will then provide commentaries or report the latest news one has heard--often these opinions or reports will have a link to a current news story or related topic. Some blogs may just link to news stories.   Most blogs are clearly biased to a particular interest or point of view and the moderator(s) of the blog usually have the right to ask that discussion be on topic, even towards a point of view.  Blogs should  be viewed more as editorials. And comments people leave after a blog entry can vary between a "letter to the editor" to a "discussion board" to even something as notewrothy of quality as writing on a bathroom wall.

Regardless, you are mainly reading opinions--any news or facts should be verified elsewhere (a responsible blogger will link to them).  When blogs break news stories, usually they are linking to another source, and you should look at that source and evaluate it carefully, just like any other web site.
