Two Types of Periodical Article Databases
Which database to use depends upon your topic.

1. General Periodical Databases

  •  Is your topic general or cross-disciplinary?
  •  Currently in the news?

If so, start with one of the All Subject periodical databases. These cover a wide range of subjects and often index a mixture of popular and scholarly sources. This is often a good place to begin research. Examples of general indexes and the kinds of articles they identify are:

EbscoHost Academic Search Premier indexes articles from magazines and journals on a range of topics from 1985 to present. Most are full text.

lexisnexis logo

LexisNexis Academic indexes articles from newspapers, magazines, and legal journals on a range of topics from 1975 to present.  Almost all are full text.
      ProQuest logo ProQuest Diversity Databases (Alt-Press Watch, Ethnic NewsWatch, and Gender Watch) indexes articles from the alternative presses, which include newspapers, magazines, and journals on a range of topics from 1990 to present.  Most are full text.
