Engineering

What Is an Engineer?
Engineers use their knowledge of mathematics, science, and technology to creatively invent, design, and build specialized products and systems. Their work focuses on solving problems safely, efficiently, and with innovation.

How to Become an Engineer
Start by choosing a field that aligns with your interests—such as aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, biomedical, or computer engineering. Then, earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university.

Gain hands-on experience through internships or co-op programs, and build both technical and soft skills like problem-solving, communication, and proficiency in engineering software. While not always required, becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) can boost your career, especially in fields like civil or mechanical engineering.

Skills & Knowledge
Engineers develop a wide range of skills, including:

  • Engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, SolidWorks, Python)
  • Problem-solving and design thinking
  • Communication (written and verbal)
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Project management
  • Data analysis and critical thinking
